When to go to Lhasa?
At more than 3,600 m, Lhasa asks for a slow first day. The Potala Palace climbs its rock in white and ochre, row upon row of windows above the city, while the Jokhang draws pilgrims who measure the last stretch in prostrations. The Barkhor circuit turns clockwise around it all day, past incense burners, prayer wheels and stalls of turquoise and felt.
