When to go to Valletta?
Valletta fills a narrow peninsula between two harbours, laid out on a grid of golden limestone and very steep steps. St John's Co-Cathedral hides a riot of gilt and marble behind a plain front, along with Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist. From the Upper Barrakka Gardens you look down on the Grand Harbour and across to the Three Cities, a short ferry ride over the water.
