When to go to Petra?
You come into Petra through the Siq, a long narrow cleft in the sandstone that ends, abruptly, on the facade of the Treasury. Beyond it the valley opens into carved tombs, a theatre and a colonnaded street laid out by the Nabataeans. Eight hundred steps up the far side stands the Monastery, on a scale the photographs never manage.
