Colour-washed townhouses ring Warsaw's old market square, a quarter of narrow lanes, cellar restaurants and courtyards above the Vistula. The Royal Route runs south from there past palaces, churches and pavement cafés towards the university and the Łazienki gardens. Over the rest of the skyline stands the Palace of Culture and Science, a stone wedding cake with a viewing deck near the top.
