When to go to Quito?
At over 2,800 metres, Quito asks you to slow down, which is no hardship in an old town of gilded baroque interiors, arcaded squares and craft markets set against the volcanoes. The cable car climbs Pichincha to 4,100 metres for a view along the whole cordillera, and Mitad del Mundo lets you stand with a foot in each hemisphere.
