When to go to Hakone?
Hakone is where Tokyo goes to sit in hot water. Ryokan and onsen tap the volcanic springs, the pirate ship crosses Lake Ashi towards a torii standing in the shallows, and on a clear morning Mount Fuji finishes the view. The Owakudani ropeway climbs over a steaming valley where the sulphur is real enough to taste and eggs are boiled black in the pools.
